Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A sealed joint between two relatively movable hollow members 10, 12 in a diving or space suit comprises a resilient sealing ring 64 mounted on one of the members for sliding contact with, and urged by deformation towards, a sealing element 58 on the other member, a diaphragm 90 or other resilient structure supporting the sealing element such that the pressure difference in one direction across the seal will deform the diaphragm to cause the sealing element to move away from, but not out of contact with, the sealing ring. The sealing ring 64 may be made of P.T.F.E. and is provided with a rubber back-up ring 68. The thrust load is carried by a ball bearing 36. As the load increases all the parts tend to deform and the increase in sealing force is relieved by the diaphragm portion 90. When the suit is used for deep-sea diving, the pressure on the outside 48 is greater than that on the inside. A variation in pressure difference across the diaphragm 90 tends to cause the sealing element 58 to deflect away from the sealing ring 64 but this movement is followed by the sealing ring under the influence of the rubber back-up ring 68 which is deformed by the pressure acting upon its surface area 70. During assembly, the rubber back-up ring 68 is compressed by bolts 67 causing it to bulge as at 66. When the suit is used for space environment, the surface area 70 of the rubber back-up ring 68 is in communication with the interior of the suit; the diaphragm 90 is again arranged so that the pressure difference tends to deflect the sealing element 58 away from, but not out of contact with, the sealing ring 64.
