Abstract

1,141,396. Electro-phoresis. SHANDON SCIENTIFIC CO. Ltd. Nov. 10, 1967 [Nov. 25, 1966], No. 52987/66. Heading C7B. [ Also in Divisions B1 and B2] An applicator for use in electro-phoresis comprises a body portion having a straight thin applicating edge provided by a number of straight spaced edge-elements aligned with one another and providing a number of co-linearly arranged liquidholding channels of the same cross-section. As shown, a thin rectangular plate 1 has one horizontal edge bent upon itself to form a handle portion 2, and the other longitudinal edge is formed with a series of notches 7 to define castellations 5 of equal length. An end castellation adjoins a wider notch 8. The outer edge 10 of each castellation is formed with a groove 11, the grooves 11 being colinear and identical in cross-section. The applicator is used in conjunction with a pallet, the upper surface of which may be formed with either a series of depressions or a series of grooves defining lands, the depressions or lands corresponding in number and spacing to the castellations. Samples of different liquids are placed in the depressions or smeared on the lands, and are transferred therefrom by contact to the grooves 11. The applicator edge is then touched lightly against the surface of a substrate to form co-linear streaks of the samples at one end of the substrate and at right angles to the direction in which the samples migrate thereon. In modifications, a slot extends inwardly from edge 10 to the base of each castellation, and the sides of the latter are apertured.
