Abstract
1,141,276. Load lowering retarding apparatus. ENTWISTLE MFG. CORP. 26 Jan., 1967, No. 3864/67. Heading B8B. [Also in Division F2] A load lowering device 1 comprises a flexible metal element 12 having one end formed as a coil 6, a velocity sensitive energy absorbing device 13 resisting acceleration of a pulley member 11 rotatably driven by the element 12 during extraction from the coil 6 and a metal bender energy absorbing means 14<SP>1</SP> positioned between the coil 6 and pulley 11 to deform the element 12 as it passes therethrough. The latter means 14<SP>1</SP> comprises two rods mounted in housing 4, 7 and a pivoted lever 16 having a nose end which pushes the element 12 into the space between the two rods as it passes. The lever 16 is lockable in either a high or low position in which the element 12 is deformed to a greater or lesser extent depending on the loading on the element. The deformation of the element 12 should be such that the load carried thereby descends at a constant speed; any tendency to accelerate however is counteracted by the device 13. When the load has reached its destination further relative movement between the load on a fitting 15 and the structure 3 supporting the device 1, pulls the remaining free end of the element 12 from the device 1. A new coil 6 is insertable in the device 1, for the next operation by means of pivoted housing parts 4, 7. In an embodiment for excessive loads, the metal element 12 is deformed between several pairs of adjacent rods.
