In an ellipsograph of the type comprising a 1st member in the form of a slide 8 movable along the minor axis of an ellipse, a 2nd member in the form of a bar 11 movable along the major axis of an ellipse, and a link 10 adjustably carrying a marking instrument 24, and adjustably pivoted between the 1st and 2nd members, a pin (16, Fig. 3) is provided at the adjustable pivot 12 between the link 10 and the bar 11, which may be manually depressed with a pushbutton 17 against the action of a spring (18) into engagement with the surface to be marked. When a semi-ellipse has been drawn in the normal manner, and the adjustable pivot 12 is at the intersection of the major and minor axes, it is therefore possible to engage the pin (16) in the drawing surface and pivot the ellipsograph thereabout through 180 degrees to enable the remainder of the ellipse to be completed accurately.
