Abstract
1,140,649. Polymerizing olefins; aftertreated polymers; polymers containing magnesium. SOLVAY & CIE. 17 Oct., 1967 [21 Oct., 1966; 1 Sept., 1967], No. 47249/67. Headings C3P and C3R. Olefin polymers are made by polymerizing one or more olefins in the presence of a catalyst comprising an organometallic compound and a solid material obtained by chemically reacting at a temperature between 40‹ and 180‹ C., in the absence of a liquid diluent, a liquid halogenated compound of a transition metal and a solid support comprising an oxygen-containing compound of a divalent metal which is anhydrous and substantially free of hydroxyl groups. The solid support may be an oxygen-containing compound of Mg, Ca or Zn such as a simple or complex oxide, sulphate, nitrate, phosphate, silicate, mono- or polycarboxylic organic acid, or a salt of a macromolecular compound, e.g. polymers of acrylates, methacrylates, maleates, fumarates, or itaconates. The preferred transition metal compounds are TiCl 4 , VOCl 3 and VCl 4 . The olefins may be ethylene, propylene, and mixtures thereof. Magnesium polyacrylic acid is made by dissolving polyacrylic acid and tetrahydrated magnesium acetate in methanol and pouring the acid solution into the acetate solution with agitation. The precipitated magnesium polyacrylate is subsequently reacted with pure TiCl 4 . Magnesium polysebacate is obtained by reacting melted sebacic acid with magnesium oxide. The polymer subsequently is reacted with titanium tetrachloride. Magnesium polyterephthalate is obtained by reacting a solution of terephthalic acid in dimethyl formamide with a solution of tetrahydrated magnesium acetate also in dimethyl formamide, and heating the precipitate under reflux. The polymer subsequently is reacted with titanium tetrachloride.
