A resistance heating cooking device for cooking generally planar articles 40 (such as hamburgers) comprises transport means (including conveyer belt 25) for delivering uncooked articles 40 to cooking means including two sets of rollers 43, 45, 47, 49 and 44, 46, 48, 50 spaced apart to provide a generally planar interstice 65 and a normally open electric heating circuit closed by articles 40 passing through interstice 65, collecting means 14, Fig. 1 (not shown), for collecting the cooked articles and a rotor 39, Fig. 1 (not shown), for simultaneously driving the transport means and the cooking means. Collecting means 14 may be a pan 63, Fig. 1 (not shown), or another conveyer belt. Belt 25 and rollers 43, 45, 47, 49 are driven by the motor through a reduction system of pulleys, sprockets and gears with a resistance 64, Fig. 3 (not shown), in series with the motor to vary its speed. Rollers 44, 46, 48, 50 may be driven or free. The numbers of pairs of rollers connected to the electrical supply may be varied by a switch. When a searing effect is desired a heated roller is used. In a modification each set of rollers may be surrounded by an electrically conductive belt.
