Abstract
706,695. Toasting apparatus SIMPLEX ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Jan. 29, 1952 [Oct. 30, 1950], No. 26406/50. Class 28(1) In toasting slices on edge on a conveyer in which the slices are conveyed between radiant heaters 19, the dropping of the slices through a hopper 35 on to the conveyer 16 is controlled by a shutter which may be in the form of an apertured drum 36, Fig. 5, rotated in timed relation with the conveyer so that the slices cannot be overlapped on the conveyer. The arcuate parts 38 of the shutter drum 36 normally span and close the openings in the toasting chamber 18 to prevent loss of heat upwards. When the drum is rotated to open position a slice in the hopper is allowed to drop through on to the conveyer 16 being guided by wires 33, and then is conveyed forward by pusher arms 70 on the conveyer chain. The arms 70 are channeled to receive the slice edge and hold it vertical. The drum is rotated from the sprocket and shaft 47 of the conveyer through a cam and connecting rod 50. The conveyer &c. is driven by an electric motor 42 through two worm reduction gears 42, 43. The motor is housed in a lower compartment under a crumb tray 26. The endless conveyer, Fig. 4, has rollers 62 running on a support rail 61 on its upper run. Crumbs are deflected into the crumb tray 26 by shedding plates 73. Other crumbshedding plates 77 are provided beneath the heaters 19. Current is picked up from bus bars 69. Heat loss is minimized by an inverted U-shaped casing 22 containing asbestos lagging 23. The heating elements may be carried in slots in depending supports. They are arranged to provide a variation in heat distribution. At the inlet end they occupy the lower 1/3 to 2/3 of the total height of the chamber and then diverge to occupy the full height. Baffles 81 reduce the amount of heat applied to the leading edge of the bread slice to prevent it being over-toasted. Guide wires prevent the slices from inclining towards the heaters. The lower chamber may be used for control devices, fuses, an indicator light 88, mechanical or electrical speed control for the motor 40 and a thermostat, all with exterior control knobs.
