[Also in Division C3] A film or board of foamed copolymer is produced by extruding a composition comprising a copolymer and a blowing agent through a film or board-forming die in which the composition is produced by the steps of forming a solution of styrene and maleic anhydride in a solvent which will not inhibit the copolymerization, carrying out the copolymerization and, while forcing forward in a vented extruder, removing at least part of the solvent by evaporation. In an example (1) a solution of styrene in methyl ethyl ketone was fed to a twin-screw extruder with a solution of maleic anhydride and ditert.-butyl peroxide in methyl ethyl ketone, after complete polymerization the solution was fed to a single-screw extruder in which it was partially devolatilized, extruded through an annular die and foamed; the emergent film was blown to a bubble, collapsed between nip rollers, slit, opened out and then compressed between rollers.
