Abstract
1354000 Extruded plastics foam BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 7 Sept 1971 [8 Sept 1970] 41632/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division C3] A process for the continuous production of profiled articles of expanded plastics material comprises forcing a plastics melt containing an expanding agent or mixture of expanding agents with or without other additives through a die followed by expansion, wherein a plastics melt is used which consists apart from expanding agent and any other additives of a mixture of 10-90 parts by weight of polyvinyl chloride or a vinyl chloride copolymer and 90-10 parts by weight of a copolymer of styrene and maleic anhydride or α-methyl-styrene having a comonomer content of 2-35% by weight of maleic anhydride or 2-80% by weight of α-methylstyrene and a mean molecular weight of 50,000-400,000 or 25,000-250,000 respectively. In Example 1 a twin-screw extruder having two temperature zones is used. The polymer mixture is melted in the first zone of the extruder at a barrel temperature of 170‹ C. after which methyl chloride under pressure is pumped into the extruder and in the second temperature zone cooling of the melt is effected at a barrel temperature of 70‹ C. Expansion takes place after extrusion through an outlet having a circular opening. In the second example a combination of two screw extruders is used, the first being the twin-screw extruder used in Example 1 and the second, arranged downstream of the first being a singlescrew extruder. The rotational speed in the first extruder is 60 r.p.m. and in the second is 4 r.p.m. whilst the screw fits snugly in the first extruder but in the second has a clearance of at least 0À4 cm.
