Abstract

A gear pair for relating an input and an output movement according to a predetermined non-linear function comprises a gear element Z having thereon a gear track S of progressively varying tooth pitch, arranged to represent the required function, meshing with a gear element B having a gear track of uniform tooth-pitch, the respective axes of rotation or directions of movement of said gear tracks being mutually skew. As shown, the gear track S is helically formed on right cylinder Z and the gear element B comprises involute teeth which are bodies of revolution and which also mesh with teeth of uniform pitch on a cylindrical gear C. The gear B is caused to traverse axially of the cylinder Z, e.g. by a pin and cam groove device, to maintain the gear B in mesh with the gear track S as the latter rotates. Alternatively the gear track of varying tooth pitch may be formed on a gear-wheel (H), a rack (U), or one side of a toothed belt (R) the other side of which has uniformly spaced teeth meshing with those of a gear-wheel (L) (Figs. 4, 6, 5 respectively, not shown). A method of setting out centre lines of the teeth of the gear track S is described.
