Abstract

1,139,958. Controlling aircraft. ROLLS-ROYCE. Ltd. 30 Nov., 1966, No. 53702/66. Heading B7G. [Also in Division F1] The efflux gases from a jet propulsion plant are fed via an annulus (18), Fig. 2 (not shown), into a number of ducts 16, each carrying a nozzle 25, 25A to 25H, rotatable in unison about an axis 30 to deflex the jet efflux. Each nozzle 25, 25A to 25H may be part-spherical at its upstream end, and be mounted on a shaft 32, 32A to 32H, rotatable in bearings 31 in a duct 16, there being a small gap 26 between the duct and the nozzle to allow a flow of efflux gas therethrough, the shaft may carry an aerofoil 45 to reduce drag. The nozzles 25, 25A to 25H may be rotated by a pilot-controlled hydraulic or pneumatic ram 38, Fig. 4, operating a linkage system 33, 34, 35, 36. The annulus (18), Fig. 2 (not shown) may be cooled at the junctions with the ducts 16 by compressor air fed through ducts (20, 21) and apertures (22) by which the cooling air enters the annulus.
