'[Also in Division F2] A drive for the continuous rotation of a working' member 3 of a mechanized drifting shield for mining medium hard to granulated ground comprises at least two ratchet mechanisms 5, 5<SP>1</SP> driven ratchet wheels 6, 6<SP>1</SP> of which are fast on the working member shaft 7 and driving carriers 8 of which pivotally carry pairs of pawls. 9, 9<SP>1</SP> loaded by springs 10 and are pivotally connected to the moving elements 11, 11<SP>1</SP> of pairs of. opposed double-acting hydraulic cylinders 12, 12<SP>1</SP>, the pawl pairs '9, 91 being relatively circumferentially displaced when the cylinder pairs 12, 12<SP>1</SP> are alternately operated. The working strokes of the two pairs of cylinders 12, 12<SP>1</SP> overlap and to provide consequential difference in stroke speeds to enable the overlapping pawls to catch up and, for some time, operate together with the overlapped pawls, 'each cylinder, in addition to ports: 13, 14 for idle and working strokes, comprises a throttled additional port in its middle region, for release of working fluid, and consequent stroke deceleration, at the stroke ends. The operation of the cylinders 12, 12<SP>1</SP> is controlled by a slide valve 16 actuated by cams 17, e.g. on the shaft 7. For reversal of the working member 3, additional, backwardly directed, pawls may be provided on the carriers 8, or removable inserts (Fig. 3, not shown) engaging tooth spaces of .the ratchet wheels 6, 6<SP>1</SP> may be secured to the carriers 8, in which case, starting with the cylinder movable elements 11, 11<SP>1</SP> fully ex-. tended, reverse rotation of the member 3 is by reverse strokes of the cylinders.
