Abstract

1,139,933. Centrifugal separators. WESTFALIA SEPARATOR A.G. 12 Aug., 1966 [12 Aug., 1965], No. 36230/66. Heading B2P. In a centrifugal separator having a device for the discharge under pressure of at least one liquid component and sludge ejection apertures in the wall of its drum, partial desludging is carried out by opening the sludge ejection apertures at predetermined time intervals, or in dependence upon the volume of sludge in the sludge chamber of the drum, and subsequently closing the apertures when the pressure in the discharge line for the liquid component drops. Liquid material to be centrifuged enters the drum of a centrifugal separator 1 through a line 2. Clarified liquid is discharged' from the drum under pressure through a line 4 by means of a paring disc. Sludge is discharged from the drum into a receptacle 3 through apertures in the wall of the drum. The opening and closing of the apertures may be controllled by a sliding piston which is actuated to open the apertures by means of fluid medium introduced through a line 5. The line 5 has an electromagnetic valve 6 which is opened by a timer 7 at predetermined intervals or by a pulse generator which operates in dependence upon the volume of sludge in the drum. In operation, if, during opening of the sludge ejection apertures, the free liquid level in the paring chamber drops and the paring disc is no longer immersed in the rotating liquid, the pressure of the liquid in the line 4 drops. A pressure switch 8 in the line 4 then effects closing of the valve 6 by interrupting the electric current supply to the valve. Alternatively, the sludge ejection apertures may be kept closed by a member acted upon by a continuous supply of operating medium thtrough the valve 6. In order to move the member so as to open the apertures, additional operating medium is supplied through a valve 9 in parallel with the valve 6. In this case, the timer 7 opens, and the pressure switch 8 closes, the valve 9.
