Abstract

1,139,831. Liquid-gas contacting apparatus. OLEOSTIN. 1 Feb., 1966 [6 Feb., 1965], No. 4400/66. Heading B1F. Liquid in a tank 70 under vacuum and heated by coils 72, e.g. -oil to be deodorized or fatty matter to be hydrogenated, is continuously caused to circulate upwardly, through an open ended chimney 78 immersed in the liquid by means of steam injected at a controlled rate through a pipe 82 into the chimney base, the induced flow of the liquid being controlled by a throttle device which is in the form of a throat constriction. An emulsion having a density lower than one tenth of the density of the untreated liquid is produced in the chimney. The steam enters through a nozzle or distributor box, and the controlled flows are such that the specific gravity of the emulsion generated by distillation in the chimney is reduced to about one tenth of that of the liquid. The chimneys may be fanned with convolutions, as in Fig. 4, to lengthen the path therethough. A plurality of chimneys working in parallel or series may be disposed in a tank, with steam injected into the base of each chimney. In the plant of Fig. 5, oil enters by conduit 100 into a first compartment defined by one end wall and a partition 94a. Treated oil leaves through a conduit 104 opening into the last compartment defined by the other end wall and a partition. 94n having passed through each chimney in turn. Deflection members 96a-96n guide the emulsion from compartment to compartment.
