Abstract

[Also in Divisions B1 and C7] An apparatus comprises a container (11), the lower part of which conforms with the envelope of interengaging and scraping screw conveyers (23, 23<SP>1</SP>): a liquid or smelt may be introduced at one end of the container (5), conveyed to the opposite end and discharged (8), gases being discharged through vacuum line (9). In operation the liquid or smelt partly fills the container (to level 7) so that continuously renewed thin layers are formed. As shown in Fig. 5, to which the numerals relate, the conveyers rotate in the same direction and the container is jacketed. Other embodiments have up to four worm conveyers of the same or different diameters rotating in the same or opposite directions. The conveyer axes may be inclined to the horizontal.
