A two-for-one twisting machine has provision to singe the yarn. Yarn 1 from a spool 2 is drawn off upwardly and passed downwardly through a spindle 3, leaves the spindle radially between a cage 4 and a balloon limiting device 5, passes through a guide ring 13, around a stripper 12, over a guide 6 and is wound by a traversing mechanism 7 onto a package 8 driven by a friction roller 9. Between the ring 13 and a guide eye 19 the balloon of yarn passes through the gas flames of a singeing device 11. The device 11 may be of arcuate shape (Fig. 2, not shown), circular shape (Fig. 5, not shown) or may be an electrically heated ring (Fig. 6, not shown) with a polygonal shaped inner surface whose flats contact the yarn. In Fig. 10 (not shown) the yarn is singed above the guide 19 where it is caused to revolve in a inverted cone orientation by a guide (24) on a plate that is driven by a friction wheel. In Fig. 11 (not shown) the rotation is cylindrical and is caused by two guides driven by the friction wheel. In Fig. 12 (not shown) the singeing device is a roller with gas jets driven in the opposite direction to the passage of the yarn. In Fig. 13 (not shown) the roller is electrically heated and in Fig. 14 (not shown) the electrical heating is radiant so that only the portion of the roller over which the yarn passes is heated. In Fig. 15 yarn 44 from a stationary package is drawn upwardly through a rotating spindle 45, radially outwardly and then downwardly through a tube 49 to be wound by a traversing mechanism 51 onto a package 52 that does not rotate with the spindle 45. In Figure 17 yarn from a stationary package 2 is drawn upwardly through a rotating spindle 61 from which it passes radially to a rotating guide 66. The package 2 is maintained stationary magnetically. Fig. 18 (not shown) shows a similar arrangement in which the package rotates. The guide ring 13 (Fig. 3, not shown) is in three pieces with a ceramic facing 14. The stripper 12 is a roller with slot of zig-zag formation around which the yarn passes.
