Abstract
1,139,483. Packaging-machines. R. A. JONES & CO. Inc. 25 Jan., 1966, No. 3312/66. Heading B8C. Open-ended collapsed cartons are withdrawn from a magazine 2, Fig. 1, and moved on support rails 144, Fig. 14, continuously where they are erected lying on one of their side walls before being transferred to an endless conveyer 11 carrying them to a filling and sealing machine 19 and finally supplying them to tamping mechanism 13, Fig. 16, from which they are discharged to a conveyer 14 for applying heat and pressure to the carton ends. Carton erection.-Pairs of suction cups (61), (62) draw the ends of the collapsed cartons downwardly, Figs. 2 and 6 (not shown), as cam-operated retainer fingers (26) release the carton edges. Lugs 5 carried by a conveyer 6 engage the centre of the carton and advance it along support rails 144 into engagement with cam-operated lugs 9 carried on a conveyer 10 which assist the lugs 5 in setting up the carton. Before erection of the cartons starts, a blade 7 carried by an overhead conveyer 8 is moved transversely between the carton walls by means of cam and roller mechanism, Fig. 13 (not shown). The blade 7 serves to hold the carton down on the track 144, co-operating with the lugs 5 and 9 in carton erection. The erected cartons are engaged by fingers 12 on a conveyer 11 and are held in squared condition below bars 194. A rail 197, Fig. 1, closes the leading flap 196 of each carton at the end opposite to that entered by the blade 7. The top end flap is raised by means of a rotating finger 200, the lower flap 204 being held open by a rail 205 as the carton is advanced to the conveyer 11. This end of the carton is closed after adhesive is applied and prior to the filling operation. Carton filling.-Buckets (211), Fig. 11 (not shown), carrying stacks of tissues are advanced on a conveyer (208) in register with the open ends of the cartons carried by the conveyer 11. Each stack is transferred, at the filling station (19), into the open end of a carton, and, after adhesive is applied, the flaps are folded to seal the filling end of the carton. Carton tamping.-The sides of the filled and closed cartons are squared up by the tamping mechanism 13, Fig. 16. As they leave the conveyer 11 the cartons are turned through 90 degrees, falling on a support plate 233 which forms part of a conveyer 236. Pusher bars 246 carry each carton to a tamping station 231, the conveyer 236 accelerating each, carton to provide a dwell period below a crank operated presser-foot 262 which descends on the stationary carton. The carton is then displaced by a succeeding carton on to a drying conveyer (14), Fig. 15 (not shown). The adhesive is enabled to set during the movement of the carton between opposed conveyer belts (288). Modified carton erection mechanism.-The erection lugs 9 and conveyer 10 may be replaced by a rotating star-wheel (212), Fig. 20 (not shown), which co-operates with the lugs 5 and blades 7 in erecting the cartons. The starwheel may have four arms each of which is curved, Fig. 24 (not shown).
