In a fluid bearing each pressure chamber has a width which decreases progressively towards its ends thereof. In an embodiment, a bush 2 is provided with a number of orifices 4, each of which is connected to a chamber. The width of each orifice is between one-third and onesixth of the angular distance between two adjacent orifices and the length of the chamber is between one-third and two-thirds the length of a clearance 3 which is supplied with the pressurized fluid. In a modification, the shaft is provided with pressurized-fluid orifices and chambers.
