Abstract

Apparatus for bending a length of structural member to a predetermined curvature without the use of heat and in a single pass comprises a base, two pairs of drive rolls between which said length may be passed, each pair of drive rolls being supported on said base for movement relative to one another such that the angle between the planes containing the axes of each pair of rolls can be adjusted and at least three angularly adjustable pairs of idler rolls positioned between said pairs of drive rolls. A structural member, e.g. of H, I or channel-section, to be curved passes through a driven pair of rolls of an assembly 12, through three pairs of idler rolls, then through a driven pair of rolls of an assembly 11, being bent to a parabolic shape between the assembly 12 and the first roller assembly and to the desired curvature between the last idler assembly and the assembly 11. The rollers of the assemblies 11, 12 are all driven at the same speed by a tensioned chain and intergearing, have serrated surfaces and may be grooved to accommodate flanges of the workpiece. One roller of each pair is adjustable towards the other and each assembly is angularly adjustable about the axis of one roll of its pair. The idler roll assemblies are additionally adjustable radially between guides 51. For use in bending H sections each idler assembly may carry guide rolls perpendicular to the idler rolls to engage the web of the section. To facilitate the insertion of an H section a triangular piece is cut out of the web and the flange bent against the free edge of the web to provide a tapered end, Figs. 11, 12 (not shown). A photo-electric cell may stop the drive to the machine when the bent end of the section interrupts the light beam. A saw is energized to cut off a predetermined length and the curving operation is restarted. Successive lengths of section may be welded together prior to curving.
