[Also in Divisions C3 and G2] The invention comprises 1 - (2 - mercaptoethyl) - aziridine and 2- and/or 3-mono- or dialkyl or aryl substituted derivatives thereof. They are prepared by reacting aziridine, or its substituted derivative, with ethylene sulphide or a precursor thereof such as ethylenemonothiolcarbonate or ethyl-2-mercaptoethylcarbonate in an anhydrous non-ionizing solvent. They may be used for hardening gelatin for photographic use, for forming resins or as pharmacologically active alkylating agents. These compounds may also be used for the introduction of mercaptoethylaminoethyl into various molecules. Thus 2 - (2 - -phenoxyethylamino)-ethaneithol is prepared by refluxing together 1-(2-mercaptoethyl)-aziridine and phenol.
