Abstract

1,138,620. Separation of propylene oxide/ methyl formate mixtures. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 3 May, 1966 [10 May, 1965], No. 19623/65. Heading C2C. Propylene oxide is separated from mixtures containing propylene oxide and methyl formate by extractively distilling the mixture in a column using a hydrocarbon solvent and maintaining the solvent concentration at above 40% by weight of the total liquid present in the extractive section of the column. The hydrocarbon solvents used are less volatile than propylene oxide and are liquid under the distillation conditions. The preferred solvents are paraffin hydrocarbons having 5-10 carbon atoms, naphthenic hydrocarbons having 6-8 carbon atoms, such as cyclohexane and methyl cyclohexane, and aromatic hydrocarbons having 6-8 carbon atoms. Mixtures which also contain acetone may be treated according to the invention.
