Abstract
1,138,600. Grinding. STAHLWERKE SUDWESTFALEN A.G. 24 June, 1966 [25 June, 1965], No. 28453/66. Heading B3D. A method of grinding-out surface defects on the outer sides of billets which have been defectmarked in a preceding examination step comprises turning the billet on one of its edges, detecting the marked defects on two upper sides of the billet, storing the information, grinding the two upper sides of the billet in accordance with this information, detecting the marked defects on the two lower sides of the billet, storing the information, and grinding the two lower sides of the billet in accordance with this information. In apparatus for carrying out the method, the defect-marked billet is fed by a driving device 2 on one of its edges past a scanning mechanism consisting of two groups 5, 6 of photo-electric cells which scan the upper surfaces of the billet and, with the use of magnetic tape and a time delay to allow for the travel of the billet, control a group 7 of grinding units 13 arranged in two rows, one for each upper face of the billet. After grinding of the upper faces in accordance with the information detected by the photo-cells 5, 6, the billet is fed by a driving device 3 over a second scanning mechanism having two groups 8, 9 of photo-electric cells which scan the lower surfaces of the billet and, with the use of magnetic tape and a time delay control a group 10 of grinding units arranged in two rows for grinding the lower surfaces of the billet. Each grinding unit consists of a column 16, Fig. 4, which is rotatable and axially slidable in a bushing 18 in a block 17 and, at one end supports an hydraulic motor connected by a shaft to gearing 34, 35 in a box 15 on the other end of the column, the gearing driving a grinding wheel 14. The column 16 is connected by a lever 23 to a pivot 24 on a support 27 and a pneumatic cylinder 21 and hydraulic brake cylinder 22 are connected to the lever to effect the axial movement of the column. The column can be rotated through 70 degrees by a lever 20, the levers of each row of units being connected by a rod to a pressure cylinder. The pneumatic cylinder 21 carries a member 28 secured to a control rod 29 having a cam 30 which co-operates with three micro-switches 31 which are adjustable by a rod 32 in accordance with the size of the billet and, during grinding, are actuated in sequence by the cam 30 as the diameter of the grinding wheel reduces to control the hydraulic motor 12 so that the grinding speed remains constant.
