A doll or toy animal has a body, limbs articulated to the body, a motor for causing the doll or toy animal to simulate the movements of a human or animal respectively, and a microphone connected to an implifier so as to be responsive to sounds and operate the motor. A battery driven motor 3 operates through a train of gears to drive a cranked axle 4 to alternately move the legs 1 and opposite arms 2 of the doll. A battery 14a is connected to a transistor amplifier 15 by operating switch 14 in the neck of the doll, but sounds received by the microphone 13 cannot activate the motor 3 until the doll is stood on its feet when switch 16 is closed to complete the circuit between the motor 3 and both of the 1-5v batteries carried in the dolls legs, the circuit 'being closed by contacts 18 which operate in response to an amplified signal from microphone 13 reacting to an external sound. The motor operates a cam which breaks the motor circuit after the figure has taken a number of steps so that the doll stops and can only be restarted by a further command to which the microphone will respond. A variable resistor 19 is inserted into the amplifying circuit so that the microphone may be adjusted so as to respond to sounds of different quality (e.g. loud and soft). The doll may be equipped with means so that sounds are emitted while the doll is walking. In the figure, such sound is produced by the pumping action of bellows 9 pumping air into a reed, the quality of the sound produced being varied by modulator 10. The pumping action may be effected by linkage 11 and connecting rod 12, but other drives fig. 3 and 4 not shown.
