Abstract
113,843. Pike, F. J., and Neville, H. March 8, 1917. Operating doors hydraulically.-In a reversible, two-main, hydraulic system for operating bulkhead doors, the master valve is connected to a differential-ram device arranged so that the small area is always under pressure, so long as pressure is available, and the pressure on the large area can be controlled to operate the valve. Springs may be provided for causing the ram to move the valve to a neutral position when the pressure fails. As shown, the ram areas are formed on the same rod j, which is provided with collars h, h<1> engaging a slide valve f arranged over ports b, c, d connected to main 1, main 2, and exhaust, respectively. The valve chamber q communicates through a port c with the pressure supply. The rod is formed with an enlarged end k, which constitutes the large ram-area and is about twice the area of the annular port p constituting the small ram-area. The end k passes through a sleeve x<1>, provided with packing m<1>, into a chamber 1 having an opening 8 which communicates through a pipe with a valve, such as a three-way valve on the bridge. The end k is formed hollow to receive a thimble 2 which is pressed inwards by a spring 3, the movcment being limited by the engagement of a flange 4 with a collar 6 which is screwed into the cap 5 of the chamber 1. The cup 2 is formed with apertures 9, 10 for the passage of fluid. The small end of the rod j passes into a sleeve x, provided with packing m, and is engaged by a thimble s which is pressed inwards by a spring t, the movement being limited by the engagement of a flange v with a collars z which is screwed into the cap u. Vents y are provided in the cap. The valve is moved to the right or the left by putting the chamber 1 to pressure or exhaust, respectively, and when the pressure supply fails, the springs cause the ram to move. the valve to the neutral position shown.
