Abstract

1,138,257. Hydrogen; ammonia. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 19 June, 1967, No. 28072/67. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C5] Hydrogen, e.g. for ammonia or urea synthesis gas, is made by catalytically steam reforming hydrocarbons, e.g. natural gas, refinery gas or naphtha, followed by catalytic shift connection. The process comprises a steam reforming step at 1000‹ to 1700‹ F. in the pressure range 400 to 600 p.s.i.g. at a mole ratio (steam to CH 4 equivalent) in the range 4À5 to 6À5; and a low temperature catalytic shift conversion in the pressure range 400 to 500 p.s.i.g. at a temperature above the dew point of steam in the gas and in the range 400‹ to 500‹ F., the moles of steam to moles of dry gas in the converter effluent being in the range 0À5 to 1À0. Fig. 1 is self-explanatory, and includes a secondary catalytic reformer supplied with air and steam for making an ammonia synthesis gas, and the recovery of a stream of pure carbon dioxide for reaction with the ammonia for making urea. Copper oxide-containing catalysts may be used for the low temperature conversion, and spent shift catalyst may precede the converters.
