Abstract

1,137,808. Fluxes. McDOWELL-WELLMAN ENG. CO. March 15, 1967, No. 12224/67. Heading C7M. A flux mixture containing by weight 50-80% of minus “" limestone, 10-48% minus 100 mesh iron oxide and 10-20% of minus #" carbon is moistened with water, granulated to particles of 0À1" to 0À5" and then charged to a depth of 6" to 16" on a travelling grate sintering machine and sintered at a temperature of at least 2100‹F. for 5 to 20 minutes by passing air through the charge. The iron oxide used may be ferric oxide derived from a steel making operation and may be used as a wet slurry. 1-45% of minus #" recycled sintered flux may also be added to the charge and the air passed through the charge may either be ambient air or pre-heated air formed by passing through the exhaust gases.
