Abstract
1,137,543. Silicate pigments. J. M. HUBER CORP. 1 April, 1966, No. 14659/66. Heading C1A. Pigmentary metal silicates with particle sizes from 0À025 to 5 microns are made by forming an aqueous slurry of at least one mol of an oxide or hydroxide of borium, calcium, lead magnesium or zinc or mixtures thereof per 4 mols of a finely divided reactive phylloidal silica containing a concentration of silanol groups of at least 1 micromol per square meter of flat surface area and a B.E.T. surface area of 40- 130 sq. metres per gram or a concentration of silanol groups of at least 20 micromols per square metre of flat surface area and a B.E.T. surface area from 300-500 sq. metres per gram, heating the slurry to from 100-175‹ C. for a time sufficient to complete the reaction and recovering the product. The heating may be performed at pressures up to 140 p.s.i.g. and the silica: metal compound molar ratio may be between 4: 1 and 1: 4. The silica may be prepared by the process of Specifications 1,016,768 and 1,020,282.
