Abstract

1,137,361. Copying lathes. W. SAUTER. 22 Feb., 1966, No. 7666/66. Heading B3T. In a copying lathe the tool 1<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1, is mounted on a carriage 61, slidable on a guide 62 by means of a piston 5 fixed to the guide, and a cylinder 4 in the carriage, the feed rate being controlled by a primary slide valve 64, and an interconnected auxiliary slide valve 32. A piston 66 is slidable in a bore in valve 64 and is connected to a magnet 23 in a casing 22<SP>1</SP>. Slide valve 32 has a projection 33 thereon which co-operates with a control member 76 mounted on guide 62. A follower 70 is provided which co-operates with a template 71, the follower being carried on a bell-crank lever 69, which is actuated by piston 66, and is secured to magnet 23. During the machining of a workpiece 78<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, the roughing cuts 111-114 are first removed from the work, and then the finishing cut 80 is taken. The feed of slide 61 for the roughing cuts is controlled by stops 89, Fig. 3, up to the points A, B, C, D and E, Fig. 2, and thereafter the template and follower 71, 70, Fig. 1, provide the control for the remainder of each roughing cut. Control member 76, Fig. 1, comprises a rotatable shaft 82, Figs. 3, 4, on which are secured a disc 83, a cam 75, ratchet wheel 85, and a hand wheel 88, and on which are rotatably mounted a cam disc 84 and a gear wheel 86, and a disc 87 adjustable but secured against rotation in a casing 109, Fig. 4. Disc 83 carries stops 89- 89<SP>111</SP> which co-operate with a stop 90 screwed in member 77, fixed to guide 62. Cam disc 84 is connected to disc 83 by a screw 91 which projects into any one of the bores 92-92<SP>111</SP>, and the cam disc co-operates with a follower 94. A pawl 97 engages the teeth 98 on one side of ratchet wheel 85, and receives a notch member 94<SP>1</SP>, and a second pawl 101 is axially displaceable in gear-wheel 86 and co-operate with the ratchet teeth 100 in the other side of wheel 85. A rack 105 carries a roller which is spring urged into engagement with a cam path 107, and meshes with gear-wheel 86. In operation, the slide is moved towards the workpiece until stop 89 abuts stop 90, and layer 111 is removed from the work up to the point A, Fig. 3. Layer 111 is completed with follower 70 taking over control from stop 89. Magnet 22<SP>1</SP>, 23 lifts the tool from the work, the carriage 61 is retracted, gear-wheel 86 is rotated by rack 105, which rotates ratchet wheel 85 along shaft 82 so that stop 89<SP>1</SP> is aligned with stop 90. This procedure is repeated until the roughing and finishing cuts have been made. Stop member 77 can be replaced by a member 121, Fig. 6, which comprises a switch 122 for electro-magnet 22<SP>1</SP>, 23, Fig. 1, the switch being actuated by the stops 89 via a pin 123, a spring urged peg 128 carried in a pivoting member 130, and pins 135, 139.
