A quenching medium for metals or alloys (e.g. steels or aluminium alloys) comprises an oil (e. g. a polyglycol ether or ester but preferably a hydrocarbon oil) containing a minor proportion of a phenol-based detergent additive containing sulphur and optionally a minor proportion of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal sulphonate and a very small amount of an anti-foaming agent (e.g. 0À005% of a silicone). The detergent additive may be made by reacting sulphur or a sulphur-containing compound (e. g. a phosphosulphurized hydrocarbon) with (1) an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal alkyl phenate or alkyl thiophenate or (2) an alkyl - phenol or an alkyl phenol sulphide and an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal base.
