Abstract

1,224,636. Quenching liquids. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 17 April, 1968, No. 18083/68. Heading C5F. [Also in Division C7] A quenching liquid comprises a light mineral oil, 1-20% by volume of the composition of a heavy mineral oil, and a minor amount of an oil-soluble additive comprising the reaction product of sulphur or a sulphur-containing compound with either (1) an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal base and an alkyl phenol or alkyl phenol sulphide, or (2) an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal phenate or alkyl thiophenate, the light and heavy mineral oils having the following properties: The additive, which preferably comprises 0À5-20% by weight of the quench, may be an overbased barium sulphurized phenate prepared by reacting sulphur with barium alkyl phenate, or the reaction product of a phosphosulphurized hydrocarbon e.g. polybutene with (1) or (2) above; it may additionally include overbased alkali or alkaline earth metal sulphonates, petroleum sulphonates, salicylates or naphthenates e.g. a calcium sulphonate. Optionally 0À005% by wt. of silicone anti-foaming agent and up to 1% of an alkylated phenol or phenothiazine antioxidant may be included.
