1,137,022. Data transmission systems. CSF-COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. 17 Nov., 1966 [26 Nov., 1965], No. 51642/66. Heading H4P. In a ciphering and deciphering apparatus digital data on a first channel is ciphered, and ciphered data on a second channel is deciphered, using a random key generator which is shared by both channels. When a signal on the first channel 1 is to be ciphered it passes via switch COM 1, Fig. 2, to unit CHT where it is ciphered with a key signal from key generator CL. The previous key signal, which relates to channel 2, is stored at MP. Under control of clock HO, the key signal for channel 1 is passed to store MT and the store MP is read out to set the key generator CL to the state it had earlier in respect of channel 2. The channel 1 key signal is now read from MT to MP. Clock HOR controls key generator CL which provides a new channel 2 key signal, so that a ciphered signal on channel 2, selected by switches COM, is deciphered in unit CHT. Clock HO next controls the interchange of key signals among MP, MT and CL, as described above, so that CL is ready to generate a new key signal for ciphering channel 1.
