Abstract

1317094 Digital transmission; ciphering systems ANSTALT EUROPAISCHE HANDELSGESELLSCHAFT 19 April 1971 [16 March 1970] 23888/71 Heading H4P In a ciphering system wherein input characters are mixed with key characters, the output of the key generator is examined for combination LLLLL whereby the generator is shifted to another combination; the ciphered output is further examined for combination OOOOO whereby the key character is caused to generate combination LLLLL hence the input character is fed directly to the output. In a ternary system the combination sought is OOO in each case. The position of contacts a1-e1 represent an input character which is modified by key character represented by contacts s11-s51. Series contacts s12-s52 reflect the positions of contacts s11-s51 and if combination LLLLL is represented a circuit to relay O is completed causing closure of contacts o1 hence the key generator moves one step forward or backward. The ciphered character is represented by energization of relays F-J temporarily self held by the contacts f1-j1 and n4 closed. Serial contacts f2-j2 detect combination OOOOO energizing relay K which opens contacts k2 causing contacts s11-s51 to assume the lower position (LLLLL) corresponding to clear text transmission.
