Abstract

1,136,777. Universal joints; flexible shafts. HERCULES Inc. 14 Nov., 1966 [12 Nov., 1965], No. 50911/66. Heading F2U. A flexible coupling for connecting an electric motor (2) to a pump 3, or agitator, (Fig. 1, not shown), or a motor vehicle engine to a gear-box, e.g. a propeller shaft (not shown), comprises a corrugated tube 1 of stereoregular polypropylene secured each end direct or, as shown, to driving and driven shafts 4, (5). As shown collars 10, secured and locked on or integral with the driving and driven shafts 4, (5), have knurled surfaces 11 on which the ends of the corrugated tube 1 may be moulded direct, or, moulded slightly larger and shrunk thereon. Alternatively the tube 1 may be secured by a hose clip, adhesive or bolting. The tube 1 may be directly connected between the driving and driven units, thus dispensing with the drive shafts.
