Abstract

1,136,594. Polymeric coating compositions. REVERTEX Ltd. 10 Dec., 1965 [10 Dec., 1964], No. 50372/64. Heading C3P. [Also in Division B2] Coating compositions comprise an aqueous dispersion of (a) at least one water-insoluble film-forming resin selected from water-insoluble polymers or copolymers of vinyl acetate and/or an ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid, and water-insoluble copolymers of styrene and/or vinyl toluene with butadiene or isoprene, and (b) a gloss improving agent selected from 2- iminazolidone, 2 - pyrrolidone, 2 - oxazolidone, N - acetyl - 2 - oxazolidone, caprolactam, acetanilide, α - chloro - acetanilide, thiourea, methylene - bis - thiourea and N - phenylthiourea, said agent being present in a concentration of 0À25 to 15% by weight of the coating composition. Component (a) may be a copolymer of an acrylate or methacrylate ester with another such ester, vinyl acetate, styrene, vinyl toluene, vinyl chloride, butadiene or methacrylic acid, or a copolymer of styrene, butadiene and methacrylic acid. Additional components which may be included in the compositions include pigments or fillers such as titanium dioxide, micronized dolomite, montmorillonite and hectorite; alkylene or polyalkylene glycols; thickeners such as hydroxy ethyl cellulose, polyvinyl pyrrolidone and polyvinyl oxazolidone; alkali-soluble resins such as an ethoxy ethyl methacrylate-dimethyl itaconate-acrylic acid copolymer; phenyl mercury hydroxide (preservative); pine oil; and anti-foam agents. The compositions may take the form of a thixotropic gel.
