Abstract

1,136,274. Magnetic tape recording and reproducing systems. AMPEX CORP. 3 May, 1966 [17 May, 1965], No. 19534/66. Heading G5R. A capstan for a magnetic tape drive system, Fig. 1 (not shown) comprises a cylindrical capstan member 10 having a driving surface 32 with a substantial coefficient of friction, a plurality of circumferential grooves 34, Fig. 2, and transverse grooves 38 being formed in the surface 32 and arranged to permit boundary layer air between tape 14 and capstan 10 to escape. Surface 32 may be formed of rubber or other resilient material. In a modification shown in Fig. 5A grooves 40, 41 in the capstan surface 32 are provided by criss-crossed spiral cuts.
