Abstract

1,136,032. Lasers. INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP. 1 July, 1966 [6 July, 1965], No. 29689/66. Heading H1C. [Also in Division G1] In a laser communication system an auxiliary high power laser beam is provided to vaporize atmospheric moisture along the communication beam path. The diameter of the communication beam is made greater than the high power beam. The wavelengths of the communication and high power beams are chosen for minimum and maximum absorption by moisture respectively. The high power beam may be switched on automatically by means which detects when the interference with the communication beam is greater than a predetermined amount. In a two-way communication system an auxiliary high power laser is provided at each station, and an automatic aiming control system may be provided. The lasers used may be (1) solid including ruby; rareearth, trivalent uranium, or (2) gaseous, including He-Ne, noble gas and caesium vapour, or (3) semi-conductor including GaAs diodes, or (4) fibre cavity lasers or liquid and organic lasers. For the communication beam, the modulation may be external using the Pockel, Kerr or Faraday effect, conductivity modulation and ultrasonic pressure effects. Alternatively, internal modulation such as hair trigger, Zeeman or Stark modulation or geometry variation may be used.
