Abstract

1,135,953. Platform elevators; tailgate elevators for vehicles. HIPOPE Ltd. 20 July, 1966 [19 Aug., 1965], No. 35527/65. Headings B8E and B8H. A load lifting and lowering arrangement comprises a rigid framework including vertical guides 2, a lifting slide 3 mounted for movement up and down within the guides 2, and a load supporting platform 4 hinged on pins 21 on the lower end of the slide 3 so that it can either be " unfolded ", i.e. swung into a horizontal working position or swung up into a " fully folded " inoperative position. Power means, such as an hydraulic cylinder and ram device as described in Specification 1,082,925, is connected with the slide 3 for raising and lowering the same through the medium of cables (not shown) and sets of appropriately disposed pulleys and is provided with a connecting element in the form of a steel cable 8 to enable the platform 4 to be folded up under power. As shown, applied to the tailgate lift mechanism of a road vehicle (not shown) the cable 8 is normally retracted through an apertured guide 12 into the vehicle body by a tension spring 14. When the platform 4 is to be folded up the slide 3 is fully lowered, the cable 8 pulled out and its outer end connected to the platform 4 by a hook 10 and eye 9. The slide 3 is then lifted under power and a pulley 11 on the slide engages the cable 8 folding the platform 4 into its inoperative position where it may be retained by catch means 16 mounted on the guides 2 and the slide 3. The platform 4 is of the linkless type and cantilevered with a block 22 associated with each hinge pin 21 to limit the downward pivoting movement to the horizontal operative position.
