Abstract

Valves controlled by pilot or relay valves.-A stop valve of the kind adapted to be actuated by a screw or, in an emergency, by fluid pressure under the control of auxiliary valves, has pistons arranged one above and one below the main valve and interconnected auxiliary valves so arranged that pressure is admitted to one cylinder and exhausted from the other when it is desired to close the main valve. The main valve 2 is fitted with pistons 3, 10 and with a spindle 13 slidably mounted in an actuating-screw 14. The pilot valves 6, 7 are loaded by springs 15 and are adapted to be simultaneously actuated by a lever 5. The valve 6 is arranged to exhaust the space below the leaky piston 3 by way of ports 8, 9, while the valve 7 is adapted to supply inlet pressure to the space behind the piston 10 by way of port 11 and pipe 12. Slide or piston valves may be substituted for the lift-valves. The piston 10 may be fitted with a flexible-disk sealing-member adapted to engage a lip on the cylinder when the valve is in the closed position.
