Abstract

1,135,595. Armour - piercing projectiles. BOFORS A.B. 13 April, 1966 [13 April, 1965], No. 16233/66. Heading F3A. An armour-piercing projectile 1 is provided with a cap 4 having a maximum diameter of 30-50% of the calibre of the projectile and an axial thickness such that on impact of the projectile on a target at an angle of incidence at which the nose of the projectile without the cap would be crushed, the cap will be deformed and distribute the load on the nose and such that at larger angles of incidence the cap will be knocked off the nose and the forward part 3 of the projectile will strike and penetrate the target. The cap which may consist of a cylindrical part 6 and a truncated cone part 7 is soldered or glued in place and projects beyond the nose of the projectile by a distance which is 20% of the calibre of the projectile. The projectile has a hardness of 600-700 Vickers and the cap is made from a tough material, e.g. unhardened steel having a hardness of from 100-200 Vickers and not more than 50% that of the projectile. A ballistic cap 5, e.g. of steel, aluminium or plastics material is fitted to the projectile.
