Abstract

1,135,542. Propylene polymers. ASAHI KASEI KOGYO K.K. 22 Feb., 1967 [23 Feb., 1966], No. 8369/67. Heading C3P. A process for producing polyolefin fibres comprises random copolymerization of propylene with 1 to 20 mol per cent of an olefinic comonomer in the presence of a catalyst capable of giving a stereospecific polymer, thermal depolymerization of the resulting copolymer so that the ratio of intrinsic viscosities of the copolymer after polymerization and before spinning is not less than 1À25, melt spinning the resulting product into yarn and then stretching the yarn. Specified comonomers are ethylene, butene-1, pentane-1, 4-methylpentene-1, octene-1, 3- methylbutene-1 styrene and substituted styrene. The polymerization catalyst may comprise an organometallic compound and a transition metal compound, and polymerization may be effected in the presence of hydrogen. Depolymerization may be effected in an extruder, optionally in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. an organotin compound, and the product mixed with heat and light stabilizers, dyeing promoters and delustering agents, and pelletized. Examples describe the polymerization of propylene with (1 and 2) ethylene, (3) ethylene in the presence of hydrogen, and (4) butene-1, in n-hexane with a titanium trichloride/diethyl aluminium chloride catalyst, the resulting polymers being purified with methanol, depolymerized in the presence of dibutyl tin maleate, mixed with stabilizers, (2 and 4) a polyaminotriazole dyeing promoter and (7) a titanium oxide delustering agent, melt spun and stretched.
