Abstract

1,135,372. Diacyl peroxides. ELECTROCHEMISCHE WERKE MUNCHEN A.G. 7 Jan., 1966 [8 Jan., 1965], No. 902/66. Heading C2C. A diacyl peroxide is prepared by adding a mixture of an acyl chloride, 3 to 12% of the corresponding carboxylic acid or anhydride and 1À5 to 5% of phosphorus trichloride (each by weight with respect to the acyl chloride) to an alkaline, aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide. Particularly when the higher diacyl peroxide products are prepared, it is advantageous to dilute the acyl chloride with petroleum ether, a suitable quantity being 20 to 40% based on the volume of the acyl chloride. If an emulsion is formed during the reaction it can be broken by dilution with sufficient water, preferably at 30‹ to 55‹ C., and the diacyl peroxide may be readily separated. In modifications of the invention (i) the carboxylic acid or anhydride is different from that from which the acyl chloride is derived, (ii) 2 to 14% of the carboxylic acid or anhydride is used and (iii) 1 to 5% of the phosphorus trichloride is used. Examples describe the preparation of dilauroyl peroxide, dimyristoyl peroxide, dipalmitoyl peroxide and dicapryloyl peroxide.
