1,135,278. Producing methane-rich gas. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. 7 April, 1966 [9 April, 1965], No. 15796/66. Heading C5E. In a process for producing methane-rich gases by reacting hydrocarbons having between 3 and 30 C atoms and steam in the presence of a nickel or cobalt catalyst and wherein a mixture of the hydrocarbons and steam is preheated before entering the reactor containing the catalyst to a temperature of not more than 450‹ C. the life of the catalyst is prolonged by passing the product gases through a second reactor containing a nickel or cobalt catalyst after the first decline in activity, the second reactor containing 10-25% of the amount of catalyst in the first reactor, the temperature at which the second reactor operates being gradually increased above the outlet temperature of the first reactor in accordance with the concentration of unreacted hydrocarbon feed in the final gas. The gradual increase in temperature in the second reactor may be obtained by an addition of air to the gases entering therein or by external heating of tubes containing the catalyst. Hydrogen or a hydrogencontaining gas may be added to the hydrocarbon/steam mixture to be reacted.
