Abstract

1,135,270. Flexible hoses. MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO. Ltd. 11 Aug., 1966 [17 May, 1966 (2); 19 May, 1966 (2)], No. 36070/66. Headings F2G and F2P. An extensible and contractible flexible hose 1 of plastics material, e.g. a blend of polypropylene and polyisobutylene, has a member inwardly facing annular folds 2 connected with each other at the inner peripheral edges 6 thereof each of the folds consisting of two annular walls 3, 4 connected with each other at the outer peripheral edges 5 thereof, one of the walls being longer than the other in a section taken along a plane including the axis of the hose. When the hose is collapsed from a stretched condition the shorter walls 4 are lapped by the longer walls 3 so that the folds are self-retained in a contracted condition as shown in Fig. 4; conversely when the hose is stretched from a contracted condition the shorter walls 4 are deflected to move away from the longer walls 3 so that the folds are self-retained in the position shown in Fig. 2. The angle α between the walls when the hose is in a stretched condition is in the range from 45 to 65 degrees, and the ratio of the lengths l 3 , l 4 is in the range 1À02: 1 to 1À1: 1. A spirally wound wire element may be disposed within the hose, and the ends of the hose may be provided with spiral folds for screw engagement in a connecting sleeve Fig. 4 (not shown). In a modification, the wall of the hose comprises two layers.
