Abstract
1,135,076. Conductive thermoplastic compositions. ROBERT BOSCH G.m.b.H. 9 Aug., 1966 [16 Dec., 1965], No. 35533/66. Headings C3C and C3P. [Also in Divisions C7 and H1] Electrically conductive compositions comprise a mixture of a non-conducting synthetic thermoplastic material and one or more conducting binary compounds of boron, carbon, silicon or nitrogen with a transition metal of Groups IV to VI of the Periodic Table, or with each other, the volumetric ratio of plastic material to conductive compound being between 15 to 85 and 90 to 10. Specified plastic materials are polyethylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride and polymethacrylates. Specified conductive compounds are molybdenum, vanadium, boron, tantalum, tungsten and niobium carbides; molybdenum and tantalum silicides; and tantalum and vanadium nitrides. The compositions may also comprise soluble or volatile salts which may be removed to yield porous mouldings, and catalytically active substances such as platinum black. The compositions may be moulded to form electrodes, e.g. for accumulators and fuel cells, and may be formed into shaped articles which may be metallized in galvanic baths to form electrical components or costume jewellery. In examples: (1) a mixture of polyethylene and silicon carbide is moulded to form a lead accumulator plate, (2) a mixture of polyethylene, vanadium carbide and sodium chloride is moulded into discs which are leached and treated with a solution of platinum hydrochloride to give electrodes for fuel cells, and (3) a mixture of polyvinyl chloride and titanium nitride is moulded to form a lattice-like basket.
