Abstract

A fire-fighting installation in a building comprises a network of ducts connectable to a source of fire-suppressing gas located outside the building and having outlets within the building for delivery of a fire-suppressing gas, each such outlet being also provided with foam-generating means which include a perforated screen and a pipe delivering a foamforming solution thereto. An opening to atmosphere may be provided enabling the whole or a part of the building to be flushed with the fire-suppressing gas. The source of the fire-suppressing gas is preferably a gas-turbine which may be started automatically in response to fire-detecting means and is provided with a fuel-cut device in the event of flame-failure. The gas from the gas turbine is cooled e.g. by water sprays 'before delivery into the building and the outlets in the building for the discharge of gas may comprise nozzles with flapvalves and means whereby air is entrained by the discharged gas. The nozzles may be surrounded by a tube allowing return flow of gas to prevent excessive back-pressure on the gassupply duct. The foam-delivery outlets may also comprise nozzles with flap-valves and means for entraining air with discharged foam. The foam-generator (see Division B1-B2) may comprise a fabric bag to which gas under pressure and a foam-forming solution is supplied. Flexible connections to the foamgenerator may be provided to extend the delivery range of the foam-generator.
