Abstract

1,134,792. Coating apparatus. B. Z. GITTELSON. 11 May, 1967, No. 21967/67. Headings B2F and B2L. An .applicator for applying gasket or other compound to an article comprises a frame 1, a chuck 3 adapted to receive the article and mounted on the frame 1 for rotation and axial movement between a normal and an operative position, a compound applicator nozzle 4 mounted on the frame so as to be universally adjustable in position relative to to chuck, said nozzle including a nozzle valve to control the flow of compound therefrom, means for driving the chuck continuously and a cam shaft arranged to be driven through a single revolution from said chuck drive means and having a chuck cam thereon to control the axial movement of the chuck and a nozzle cam thereon to control the nozzle valve. The drive mechanism is from a motor 6 through a gear box 11, the drive to the camshaft being through a one revolution clutch controlled throwgh rod 13 by foot pedal 12. The nozzle valve is fluid pressure operated from a control valve 44 operated by a push-rod from said nozzle cam on said cam shaft and the nozzle 4 is fed with the gasket compound from a pressure vessel 5 pressurised from a pneumatic supply controlled by a pressure reducing valve 86. The nozzle 4 is mounted by means of a lockable universal ball joint 69 on an arm 70 which is vertically adjustable on a post 71 and the nozzle consists of a hollow body 53 with a nozzle jet 54 having an outlet orifice 57. Flow from the orifice 57 is controlled by a needle valve 58 slidably mounted in an upper body portion 59 and sealed to the body portion 53 by means of a resilient diaphragm 62. The upper end of needle valve 58 is operatively connected to a piston rod 65 of a double acting pneumatic cylinder 66 supplied with compressed air by the valve 44 in response to the position of the nozzle operating cam. Gasket compound is supplied to the body portion 53 through inlet port 56 and when the needle valve 58 is opened the compound extrudes from orifice 57.
