Abstract

1,134,331. Seismic prospecting. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 25 Jan., 1966, No. 3308/66. Heading H4D. In a seismic reflection method of exploring geological formations located below a body of water by means of a pressure wave generated by the formation of a submerged bubble, secondary pressure waves are suppressed by admitting gas to the interior of the bubble to prevent its implosion. Several embodiments of the pressure wave generator comprising a first bell in which a gas mixture is exploded, a second bell adjacent to or partly surrounding the first bell and which is supplied with gas for preventing the implosion, and gas-supply conduits with orifices in or below the bells are described. Alternative embodiments in which the bubble is formed by an electrical discharge between two electrodes are described.
