Abstract

1,114,286. Geophysical prospecting. COMPAGNIE DES COMPTEURS. 1 5 Sept., 1965 [16 Sept., 1964; 7 July, 1965], No. 39469/65. Heading H4D. In a system for examining the geological structure of the sea-bed, the attenuation of lowfrequency (0À1 c/s. to 1000 c/s.) acoustic waves reflected from the sea-bed and received by a receiver maintained at a constant distance above the sea-bed is measured. Continuous wave signals of substantially constant amplitude and of fixed or varying frequency are emitted by a towed transmitter 12 which may be maintained at a constant depth, below sea-level. One or more receivers 22 are carried by diving vanes 24 which continuously transmit measurements of their distances from the sea-bed to a ship-borne system 21. System 21 controls the length of a cable 25 between the ship and a float 23 so as to maintain constant the distances of a receiver 22 from the sea-bed and from the transmitter 12. Received signals are recorded, together with the geographical location of the ship, by ship-borne equipment 31 and their attenuation, after taking into account parameters such as the frequency of the transmitted waves, the immersion depth of the transmitter 12, and the distance between transmitter 12 and receiver 22, provides an indication of the geological nature of the sea-bed. The distance of a receiver 22 from the sea-bed may also be recorded and taken into account in interpreting the attenuation of the received signals. To aid in interpretation of the recorded signals, a plurality of records may be made for a region of the sea-bed with different transmission frequencies or with various distances between the transmitter 12 and receivers 22. The distance of a receiver 22 from the sea-bed may be varied according to the water depth if variations in the water depth are significant.
