Abstract
1,134,117. Nuclear fuel. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 10 April, 1967 [28 April, 1966], No. 18767/66. Heading G6C. A nuclear fuel element comprising coated fuel particles held together by a thermosetting resin is formed by contacting the particles with powdered resin and resin solvent, evaporating the solvent, and heating the particles to cure the resin and fix the particles together. Fuel particles coated with pyrolytic carbon to retain fission products are treated in a rotary drum with a mixture of powdered phenolformaldehyde resin, graphite, and methylated spirit. The coated particles are introduced into axial blind holes in the wall of a graphite tube, vibrocompacted, and the whole element heated.
