Abstract

1,133,713. #<SP>4,9(10)</SP>-3-oxo-steroids. MERCK & CO. Inc. 4 Nov., 1965 [6 Aug., 1964], No. 46366/65. Divided out of 1,135,903. Heading C2U. Novel steroids of the formula (wherein X is a halogen; OTHP is a tetrahydropyranyloxy radical; and R is C 1-4 alkyl) are prepared by reacting the corresponding 17#- hydroxy - 17α - ethynyl steroids with dihydropyran in an inert solvent or in an excess of dihydropyran and in the presence of an acid catalyst to form the corresponding tetrahydropyranyl ethers, and reacting these with a halogenating agent; and are converted by reaction with a strong base in an inert solvent at 75-120‹ C. and subsequent acid hydrolysis to 17# - hydroxy - 17α - haloethynyl steroids corresponding to the 17#-hydroxy-17α-ethynyl steroid starting materials.
